Automatic H.F. Ballast Dimming Controls

The Dimming Controls are self-contained units which contain all or some of the following:

  • Passive Infra-Red heat detecting occupancy sensing.
  • Light level sensing.
  • Active Infra-Red remote control sensing.

They are usually Mains driven with a power relay output capable of switching lighting within the field of occupancy detection without any additional controls or units.

Two base versions are available:
Analogue Dimming Modules for 1-10V DC controlled ballasts
Digital Dimming Modules for digitally controlled ballasts

They are setup and configured by the Infra-Red remote control system which can also be used to override the unit if required.
They are only available in a ceiling housing which has two alternatives: Flush Mount and Hard Surface Mount

The full list of Dimming Controls is:

RDA2-Remote Dimmer Analogue for dimming up to 12 analogue ballasts.

The ADM1 family:
The ADM1 is powered directly from the mains and supplies a switched Live output to switch the lights and an isolated 1-10V DC output to control up to 8 analogue dimmable ballasts. The ADM1 is used to set a light level and then will as far as is possible fade the lights up and down to maintain that level. When the area becomes unoccupied the module will fade the lighting down and then switch it off after a presettable delay. The units can be overriden and configured using an I.R. control system. Each unit has its own microprocessor and associated non-volatile memory so that the configuration settings may be changed at any time and re-stored without being affected by power loss or mains fluctuations. The power control relay is capable of controlling up to 3 amps of inductive loading safely and securely with complete isolation when off. The coverage of the PIR and the switching capability make the ADM1 most suited to small rooms or offices. A typical installation would be above a desk in an office, in the centre of, and controlling, four luminaires directly.

Fitting Variations
The ADM1F is a flush fitting unit for mounting directly into ceiling tiles from 2mm to 20mm thick with a single 54mm mounting hole. It is supplied as standard with 2 metres of three way mains cable. All F variants can be modified to a K with a spring Klip kit to allow for single sided fitting. The ADM1S is for surface mounting and comes complete with a receptacle fitted with a standard 20mm round conduit entry. The receptacle is mounted on the ceiling and wired in before the ADM1S is plugged into place. The ADM1S has also been designed so that it can be pushed home or removed even when the mains are on. The connections for both versions are Mains Live, Mains Neutral and Switched Mains Live plus +ve and -ve connections for the dimmable ballasts..

Other Variations

The EAD1 is an economy version of ADM1 capable of driving only two ballasts maximum. It is designed to be fitted by O.E.M.s into lighting fixtures and is available only in the ‘in Housing’ or EAD1H fitting. The connections are identical to ADM1 except that the low voltage output is not isolated from the mains.

The DDM1 family:

The DDM1 is powered directly from the mains and supplies an isolated 0-12V DC digital communications output to control up to 8 digital dimmable ballasts. The DDM1 is used to set a light level and then will as far as is possible fade the lights up and down to maintain that level. The communication system can switch the ballasts off so no power control relay is needed. The coverage of the PIR and the switching capability make the DDM1 most suited to small rooms or offices. A typical installation would be above a desk in an office, in the centre of, and controlling, four luminaires directly. Two variations of these modules are needed to cope with two possible minimum dimming variation of the digital ballasts. the DDM1/1 is for 1% minimum dimming and the DDM1/10 is for the 10% mimimum dimming.

Fitting Variations
The DDM1/1F or DDM1/10F are flush fitting units for mounting directly into ceiling tiles from 2mm to 20mm thick with a single 54mm mounting hole. They are supplied as standard with 2 metres of three way mains cable. All F variants can be modified to a K with a spring Klip kit to allow for single sided fitting. The DDM1/1S or DDM1/10S are for surface mounting and come complete with a receptacle fitted with a standard 20mm round conduit entry. The receptacle is mounted on the ceiling and wired in before the DDM1 is plugged into place. The DDM1/1S or DDM1/10S have also been designed so that they can be pushed home or removed even when the mains are on. The connections for both versions are Mains Live, Mains Neutral plus GND and +12V connections for the dimmable ballasts..

Other Variations
The EDM1 is an economy version of DDM1 capable of driving only two ballasts maximum. It is designed to be fitted by O.E.M.s into lighting fixtures and is available only in the ‘in Housing’ or EDM1/1H or EDM1/10H fitting. The connections are identical to DDM1 except that the low voltage output is not isolated from the mains. Two versions are available for the 1% and 10% minimum dimming ballasts.

The RDA family:
The RDA is powered directly from the mains and supplies an isolated 1-10V DC output to control up to 8 analogue dimmable ballasts for the RDA1 and 12 ballasts for the RDA2. The RDA is used to fade fluorescent lighting from full brightness to fully dim using the I.R. remote control system. It is primarily designed for small 24 hour manned control rooms or offices with little or no outside light and is used to adjust lighting to various times of the day. For instance many 24 hour control rooms run a skeleton night shift and like to have reduced lighting levels at night, T.V. studio control cubicles work in low light levels normally but light levels have to be raised for cleaning and maintenace work.

Fitting Variations

The RDA1F or RDA2F are flush fitting units for mounting directly into ceiling tiles from 2mm to 20mm thick with a single 54mm mounting hole. They are supplied as standard with 2 metres of three way mains cable. All F variants can be modified to a K with a spring Klip kit to allow for single sided fitting. The RDA1S or RDA2S are for surface mounting and come complete with a receptacle fitted with a standard 20mm round conduit entry. The receptacle is mounted on the ceiling and wired in before the RDA is plugged into place. The units have also been designed so that they can be pushed home or removed even when the mains are on. The connections for both versions are Mains Live, Mains Neutral plus +ve and -ve connections for the dimmable ballasts..
